Mastodon's official iOS app brings the decentralized fediverse to your pocket without asking you to pay or sit through ads. At 104 MB it installs light, and four-plus years of iteration since its 2021 launch show in a feed that genuinely stays chronological. The experience rewards users who already know which server they belong to, but can feel like arriving at a party where nobody explains the dress code if you are brand new to federated social networking.

What it gets right

The chronological feed is the headline feature and it actually delivers. Posts appear in order, full stop, with no promoted content or engagement-bait wedged between them. Hashtag following works cleanly, lists keep specific circles organized, and content filters let you scrub out words or phrases you would rather not see. For anyone burned out on algorithmic feeds, scrolling here feels noticeably calmer and more predictable.

Where it stumbles

Onboarding remains the app's weakest point. Choosing a server is a concept that stops a meaningful number of curious newcomers cold, and the app does not do enough to walk them through that decision. Multi-account switching exists, which experienced fediverse users will appreciate, but the interface assumes a baseline of knowledge that casual social media converts simply do not have when they first open the app.

Who should download it

Journalists, researchers, open-source enthusiasts, and anyone who left mainstream platforms over data or algorithm concerns will find Mastodon a comfortable fit. The 13K store ratings averaging 4.55 suggest a satisfied core audience. If you want a low-friction, tap-and-scroll experience similar to mainstream apps and have no interest in the federated model, the learning curve here may outweigh the benefits.

Pros

  • Strictly chronological feed with no algorithmic reordering
  • No ads anywhere in the experience
  • Hashtag following and word filters give solid content control
  • Multiple account support built in natively
  • Free with no paywalled core features

Cons

  • Server selection during signup is confusing for new users
  • Decentralized model requires prior knowledge to navigate confidently
  • Smaller overall audience than mainstream social platforms
  • In-app purchases are listed but their scope is not clearly communicated upfront
