Windfinder has been around since 2009 and it shows, in the best way. Built specifically around wind rather than generic weather, it pulls real-time data from 21,000 stations and covers forecasts for over 160,000 locations worldwide. The depth of parameters on offer, from wave period to felt temperature to Beaufort scale readings, makes it genuinely useful for sailors, kitesurfers, and pilots rather than just curious commuters checking if they need an umbrella.

Where It Earns Its Reputation

The forecast detail per location is the standout. You get wind speed, gusts, direction, wave height, wave period, wave direction, precipitation, cloud cover, air pressure, and tide highs and lows, all in one view. Switching between knots, Beaufort, mph, km/h, and m/s is straightforward, which matters when you are coordinating with people who use different measurement conventions. The animated global wind map adds useful at-a-glance context before you drill into a specific spot.

Gaps Worth Knowing

Coverage quality depends heavily on station density in your region. Remote or inland areas with few of the 21,000 stations nearby will see interpolated forecasts rather than measured data, and the app does not always make that distinction obvious. The recently added severe weather warnings for the US and Europe are a welcome addition but feel like catch-up rather than a differentiator. At 79 MB the install is reasonable, though in-app purchases suggest the best experience may not stay fully free.

Who Should Install It

This is not a casual weather app. If your outdoor activity, sailing, surfing, paragliding, cycling, or open-water swimming, depends on knowing wind direction and gust strength at a specific coastal or lake location, Windfinder is hard to beat at any price. The webcam integration lets you visually verify conditions before leaving home. Casual users who only want a rain forecast will find the interface more data-heavy than they need.

Pros

  • Exceptional wind parameter depth including gusts, direction, wave period, and Beaufort scale
  • Tide forecasts for over 20,000 locations is rare among free weather apps
  • Real-time station data from 21,000 sources keeps readings grounded in actual measurements
  • Multiple unit options make it practical for international use
  • Favorites and home screen widgets allow quick monitoring without opening the full app

Cons

  • Station coverage is uneven, rural and inland areas rely more on model data than live readings
  • In-app purchases create uncertainty about long-term free access to full features
  • Severe weather warnings only cover the US and Europe, leaving other regions without alerts
  • The parameter-heavy layout has a learning curve for users new to wind-specific forecasting
  • Webcam availability is location-dependent and can be hit or miss outside popular spots
